POSITION TYPE:  Hourly, Non-exempt


JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for providing police services to the public for the purpose of maintaining public order and safety.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Patrols assigned areas to identify and deter criminal activity and to identify public safety hazards.
  •  Responds to calls for police service and provides assistance to citizens.
  • Issues citations and makes arrests for traffic law violations.
  • Investigates crimes, traffic accidents, missing persons, and other incidents.
  • Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws by issuing warning and summonses and by making arrests.
  • Writes reports of crimes, accidents, arrests, and other incidents.
  • Prepares cases for presentation to prosecutors.
  • Must be able to render credible testimony in a court of law.
  • Directs traffic and provides crowd control.
  • Participates in community problem solving activities.
  • Renders assistance in calls for service for vehicle lock-outs in emergency situations, escorts, and emergency contacts.
  • Refers citizens with non-law-enforcement problems to appropriate agencies.
  • Assists other agencies with investigations.
  • Conducts safety programs for schools, clubs, and other civic organizations.
  • Serves as Front Desk Officer as assigned; greets all pedestrian traffic and handles the initial phases of all complaints or inquiries; provides assistance to the on-street field supervisor; accepts cash bonds; admits and releases prisoners.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal criminal and civil law.
  • Knowledge of the procedures, guidelines, and equipment used in modern law enforcement activities.
  • Knowledge of the geographic layout of the city.
  • Skill in the implementation and enforcement of policies and guidelines.
  • Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.
  • Skill in the use of firearms and other specialized law enforcement equipment.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or equivalency required.
  • Minimum age 21.
  • Valid Missouri’s driver’s license.
  • Must be certified as police officer by the State of Missouri.
  • Must obtain certifications or qualifications in type III breath-alcohol testing, speed radar operation and handgun and patrol rifle operation.
  • Required to meet physical fitness standards as set by the department.
  • Must have no convictions for felonies or crimes involving domestic violence.
Applicants selected to participate in the hiring process will be required to participate in a written exam, interview and background investigation. The exam and interview are by invitation.

The total compensation value for this position is $31.89 hourly/$66,337 yearly, which consists of the starting hourly rate plus the benefit package. ADDITIONAL PAY:  Currently we are offering a $6,000 certification stipend to be paid over a 3 year period.  To be eligible for the stipend, candidates must have a valid Peace Officer License issued by Missouri POST Commission at the time of hire
