JOB SUMMARY:  This position is responsible for performing technical duties in the operation and daily maintenance of the Transfer Station.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Loads trash and recycling materials into open top trailers, using a hi-lift or backhoe.
  • Prepares loaded trailers for transport to the landfill or recycling center; which consists of tarping and weighing the trailers using yard trucks and pulling empty trailers into the pit.
  • Responsible for transporting multiple 20 yard containers consisting of single stream and loaded cardboard using the roll-off truck. The yard containers are moved between the recycling center and transfer station to be both emptied and replaced.
  • Loads brush and compost using a hi-lift or backhoe, into 50 yard containers and transports them with the roll off truck to the compost storage area.
  • Loads appliances into 50 yard containers and transports them to the metal recycling facility using the roll-off truck.
  • Responsible for loading special waste from Republic Services into designated trailers specifically assigned for this waste using equipment such as the hi-lift.
  • Conducts daily inspections of all transfer station equipment including but not limited to hi-lifts, backhoes, yard trucks, roll-off trucks, forklifts and pickup trucks, to identify maintenance needs and complete preventative maintenance based upon those inspections.
  • Oversees and assigns work for “work release inmates”.
  • Maintains grounds in accordance with Transfer Station and MDNR specifications.
  • Recovers Freon from appliances using a Freon Recovery Machine.
  • Monitors materials brought into the Transfer Station to prevent restricted waste from hitting the tipping floor.
  • Assists the Transfer Statin Chief Operator in the training of other personnel.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
In the absence of the Transfer Station Scale Operator, this position may be required to perform these duties when assigned:
  • Operate the computer for incoming and outgoing refuse, recycling and compost materials.
  • Responsible for accepting and processing payments in the form of cash, check or debit/credit card.
  • Responsible for ensuring all cash and charge accounts are charged correctly.
  • Maintain current and accurate records as required by DNR policy.
  • Prepare and process paperwork for loaded trailers in transport to the landfill or recycling center.
  • Monitors and inspects material brought into the transfer station, making sure loads are tarped and secured as required by City Policy.
  • Utilizes the video surveillance system to monitor “work release inmates” from the scale office.
  • Does daily cleaning of the scale office, breakrooms and bathrooms.​​​

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

  • Knowledge of MDNR and EPA regulations.
  • Knowledge of acceptable and non-acceptable materials in the waste stream as well as what cannot be loaded into the single stream recycling trailers.
  • Knowledge of the vehicles and equipment used at the Transfer Station which includes but is not limited to hi-lifts, backhoes, yard trucks, roll-off trucks, forklifts and pickup trucks.
  • Knowledge in the operation of the Freon Recovery Machine.
  • Skill in the use of computers and other modern office equipment.
  • Skill in the operation of hi-lifts, backhoes, yard trucks, forklifts, and roll-off trucks.
  • Skill in the operation of truck scales.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must comply with Missouri CDL requirements and possess and maintain a valid Class “B” or better CDL with air brake endorsement.
  • High School graduate or equivalent.​​​​

The total compensation value for this position is $27.75 hourly/$57,712 yearly, which consists of the starting hourly rate plus the benefit package.
