POSITION TYPE: Hourly, non-exempt
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for interpreting and enforcing city codes and zoning ordinances. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Code Inspector II.”
MAJOR DUTIES:
- Performs inspections of electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and building work within the city limits.
- Performs building inspections for minimum property standards. Inspects existing structures to ensure compliance with minimum code standards and conducts any inspections required by city ordinance.
- Contacts, investigates, and prosecutes building code violations.
- Reviews new construction and remodeling plans prior to permitting. Assists in reviewing plans for compliance with zoning and building regulations.
- Conducts regular route surveys to identify possible zoning, signage, code, etc. violations and reports these to the Property Maintenance & Zoning Inspector.
- Maintains records of all inspections, plan reviews, violations, and complaints.
- Assists in writing permits, assisting customers, and answering the telephone.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
- Knowledge of building, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical codes.
- Knowledge of the materials and methods employed in building construction and renovation.
- Skill in the use of computers and various software programs.
- Skill in interpreting drawings, plans, and blueprints.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma and knowledge of the Municipal and Model Codes.
- Hold a valid Missouri Driver’s License.
- ICC Certified or ability to become certified within 12 months.
- Code Inspector II if ICC certified.
Salary per hour $21.54, plus a generous benefit package.
- Bi-weekly pay periods.
- Thirteen paid holidays per year.
- 96 hours of vacation – accrued throughout the year.
- 96 hours of sick leave – accrued throughout the year.
- 2 days of personal leave per fiscal year. Must be employed on July 1 of the fiscal year to receive.
- City paid monthly premiums for health and dental insurance – Employee only.
- City paid monthly life insurance for employee only (1 times annual salary up to $50,000).
- Optional group term life insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
- Optional vision insurance purchased at employee’s expense.
- Voluntary deferred compensation plan – not matched by the City.

- Total compensation value (Hourly starting rate plus benefits value) for this position is $30.16 hourly.
